You see I hear this voice, it calls out my name.
When I answer, I sense a smile.
It’s like seeing parts of a portrait.
I can see the outline of her ear.
I can see her earrings.
She must like the ones that dangle.
That’s all she ever wears, they draw attention to her neck.
It’s almost as if she is afraid to show me her eyes.
My senses say they are blue.
I see the shape of her lips.
They are always decorous.
It’s as if, she is struggling, trying desperately to conceal or control her emotions.
Perhaps that is why she, will not allow me to see her eyes.
I do not know if they smile, or sparkle or even laugh.
When I hear my name, she never answers.
Occasionally, I will hear a rather demure giggle.
She seems content to drive me mad.
I have settled that I’m slowly going insane.
So, I try not to answer.
Ignoring her, refusing to answer.
Once in a while she will wear her hair in a bun, or pull the hair behind one ear.
To show off her earrings, allowing a glimpse of her profile.
She is hauntingly beautiful, the way a woman who is confident is.
I’ve settled on my insanity.
I’ve gone hours, even the entire day.
Then I surrender, and I sense a smile.
I search for her eyes.
And it all begins anew.
